Let\u2019s discuss the difference between it\u2019s vs. its. This is a common error in reports, and it is usually not picked up by spell check.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s is the shortened form of the words: It Is. The golden rule to remember is that it\u2019s always, always means \u201cIt IS.\u201d Anytime you use \u201cIt\u2019s\u201d in a sentence, say it as It IS. Example: I think It\u2019s Going to be a beautiful day. Now, let\u2019s rewrite is as \u201cIt IS.\u201d I think it is going to be a beautiful day.  This makes grammatical sense.<\/td><\/tr>

Conversly, ITS shows possession. Example: The cat is licking its paw. For practice, let\u2019s write it using the improper form of it\u2019s. The cat is licking it\u2019s paw. If you remember the golden rule stated above, you\u2019ll realize this is the improper use of it\u2019s when you proofread. If you remember that \u201cit\u2019s\u201d always means \u201cIt IS,\u201d you will realize the improper example reads: The cat is licking it is paw.  When you say it that way, you see the error.<\/td><\/tr>

Its always shows possession. Examples: the cat is licking its paw. the cat usually does this after eating from its bowl.<\/td><\/tr>

I always teach that when you get to small words like \u201cif, is, it\u2019s, its, to, too, etc.\u201d in your reports, hit the brakes!
