Advise vs. Advice<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
What\u2019s the difference between the two?….And, are we using the words \u201cadvise\u201d or \u201cadvised\u201d in our reports too much?!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Advice is a noun <\/strong>that refers to recommendations or suggestions about what someone should do.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Advise is a verb <\/strong>that means to offer advice or recommendations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n So, when thinking about police reports, ask yourself\u2026is the word \u201cadvise\u201d (to give advice or recommendations to someone) really the right word to use?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n I\u2019ve read a lot of police reports where everyone involved is advising each other of various things. Examples: – The driver advised me her license was valid.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Is anyone in the above examples really giving advice or recommendations??<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n No! They are really just telling the other person some bit of information.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n As police officers, a lot of us use \u201cadvise\u201d or \u201cadvised\u201d too much in our reports.
